How this is calculated
- Volumetric (dimensional) weight
- (length × width × height) ÷ divisor × units
- The divisor is the carrier's, not a constant: 5000 is the usual cm/kg courier figure, 6000 turns up on economy air, and 139 is the standard in/lb figure in the US. Check your own rate card and put that number in the field.
- Billable weight
- max(actual weight, volumetric weight)
- This is what catches people out on light, bulky products — a pillow or a foam mat is priced on the box, not the scales.
- Total shipping cost
- billable weight × rate + flat handling fee
- Share of order value
- total shipping cost ÷ order value × 100
- Under 8% is comfortable, 8–15% is workable, past 15% the parcel is deciding your margin for you.
Single, simple rate card only. Real carrier pricing adds zones, remote-area surcharges, duties and fuel adjustments — this gives you the base figure to sanity-check a quote against, not a quote.
